In this day and age, children who have not received a proper education are going to be at a definite disadvantage these days and parents are turning to various alternative options when it comes to providing an education for their child, including Christian education. Education is an important part of a healthy developing child and often times traditional schooling options, public schools or otherwise, will just not do the trick.

This is where home schooling comes into play; with the right resources you can provide your child with everything that they need to develop into strong, healthy, intelligent and resourceful young adults. Keep in mind that home schooling is not always as easy as you might want it to be, and there will be trials but that is what a good education is all about. Christian education takes it a bit further, incorporating morals and everyday life lessons into the overall theme of education.

To help you along the way to a good Christian education provided for your child in the comfort of their very own home, here are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind, to help both you and your little one benefit from the situation as much as you possibly can.

Hang onto your sense of humor; if you take things too seriously and don’t provide any freedom or flexibility for your child they will probably resent the situation and may not benefit as much as you would like them to.

Remember to keep the Christian in the ‘Christian education.’ Sure, you might not be a licensed teacher but nobody can teach your child Christian morals and theories quite like you can, and nobody can instill in them the values that you want them to have like you can as their primary care giver.

Identify the line between home and schooling, and keep it there. If you blur the line, you run the risk of ruining your child’s education and disturbing their home life as well, neither of which will serve your child well at all. In such a case, you might as well send them to traditional public school or Christian school.

Although it might sound a bit crazy, consider how your child feels about the home schooling situation. They might be able to offer you more insight than you think on how to handle the Christian education at home.

Remember to make sure that your child is as well rounded as possible. Put them in sports, enter them into a church youth group, or do something else that puts them around other children their age. Christian education is not about seclusion from the world; it is about a different way of thinking and educating your child. Forming bonds with other human beings is just as important a part of education as reading and writing.

As you know, children now a days are bombarded with information that is neither age appropriate or Godly. So it is very important that the time we spend with children is used wisely to equip them to be a leader, and not a follower.

It does not matter whether you are a parent, Sunday school teacher, or a youth pastor you can use the time that you are with the children to keep them from falling into the traps that society offers. There are many books, ministry programs, and education material available to you to help reinforce the things that you warn them about every day.

Many years ago books geared toward children were, to be blunt, dorky. They meant well, but they were not geared toward really getting your children’s attention and keeping it. But, now a days you have Christian authors that really understand what it takes to get this generation’s attention. You have authors like Frank Peretti that writes some of the most cutting edge fictional stories on the market, for your older teens. Then for your younger children you have the entire line of VeggieTale stories.

You can find almost any type of book. There are books available to help you discuss topics that are not easy for some parents, like warning them about drugs, alcohol, or to help back your stance on abstinence. Some authors have great wit and humor that allows them to make a statement, without sound like they are lecturing. For your younger children there are books that teach favorite bible stories, or there are even books that have moral lessons like not telling lies, or how cheating is a sin.

Children’s ministries have also come along way. There are many programs that you can enter your child in. They have even begun to accept them at an earlier age. There are many children’s ministries available, you can get them involved in the music ministries, or perhaps they are showing at an early age that they maybe suited for mission work, there are programs that will help them get their feet wet. There are website available that will give you marvelous ideas on how to identify and nurture their gifts.

The education material you can now find online is endless. There are books to help you, help your child through any crisis that they may encounter. Websites offer age appropriate Sunday school lesson complete with games or DVDs to help emphasis your points. These are great way to combat the junk that society tries to influence them with.

The resources that are now available in children’s ministries are endless. They are current, hip, and most importantly, biblically based.

“Train your child in the way he should, go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6
